Write to the desk

This page tells you what the desk can act on, what it cannot answer, and what happens to a correction once it is received.

What is worth writing about

Write when a figure looks wrong. The tables republish rows from named public sources, and a reader may notice that a number no longer matches the publisher's current page, or that a source has moved or closed. A message that names the table, the row, and what you saw is the most useful kind. The desk reads every message and checks the figure against the source again.

A question about how the measurement is taken is also worth writing about. If the method on the page is unclear, or if you want to know why the hour of reading is republished, ask. The desk answers questions about its own method, but it does not interpret what the figures mean for your own decisions. That is for you and, if you choose, an adviser you trust.

What the desk can act on

A correction is the clearest thing the desk can act on. If a figure is wrong, the desk corrects it and dates the correction on the page. The change is not hidden; the page states that the figure was corrected and when. If the source has moved, the link is updated and the new location is named. If the source has closed, the row is marked as unavailable and the desk looks for the same fact at another named source.

A question about how the measurement is taken is also something the desk can answer. The method is fixed: a public source is read, and the figure is republished with the date and the hour it was read. If that is not clear on a page, write and the desk will explain it. The desk does not change a figure because a reader says it is wrong without checking the source first.

What the desk cannot answer

The desk cannot give personal investment advice. It will not tell you whether to open an account, fund a broker, or choose one product over another. The figures describe what things cost or how they are registered; they do not recommend any action. The desk also cannot help with a broker's account. It has no access to any broker's systems, does not hold client money, and cannot see a reader's balance, trades, or withdrawals.

The desk does not answer tips about a broker's behaviour. It does not investigate complaints, mediate disputes, or forward messages to a broker. A reader with a problem at a broker must use the broker's own complaints process or the regulator. Writing to this desk with a tip will not start an investigation, and the desk will not reply with a view on what you should do.

What happens to a correction

A correction is made on the page where the figure appears. The corrected figure is republished with the source, and the correction is dated. The desk does not send a personal reply to every correction, but it reads every message and checks the source. If the reader's message names a figure that is wrong, the desk corrects it and the page shows the date of the correction.

If the figure is right but the reader disagrees with the source, the desk does not change it. The desk republishes what the source says, not what the desk thinks. If the source itself changes, the desk updates the page and dates the update. A correction never removes the record; it changes the figure and says when it changed.
